On his third solo album Peter Gabriel eliminated cymbal usage. But what if you threw out the rest of the drum kit as well? And used bubble wrap in its place?
Instrumentation: Percussion consists of four types of bubble wrap being popped or squeezed, plus the popping of two small inflated paper bags and two more plastic shopping bags. The rest is guitars, bass guitar, and a purely decorative miniature erhu that wasn't made well enough to be properly played. No hand claps or synths. And that "vinyl surface noise" is still just more pop music - made with very tiny bubble wrap.
